Oral cancer kills one person every hour of every day and women are now at a greater risk (rather than men a few years ago). More than 60% of cases are discovered too late and 1 in 4 people with oral cancer will die because of this.
Oral cancer used to be attributed to smoking, tobacco use, and drinking with men statistically at a greater risk. Now the number one cause of oral cancer is the HPV virus. With these new findings, people need to be aware of symptoms and get oral cancer screenings by their dentists on a regular basis (every 6 months).

Symptoms of oral cancer include:
Pain or numbness in the mouth or lips
Tenderness, burning or a sore that won’t heal
A lump or wrinkled or bumpy patch inside your mouth
Gray, red, or white spots or patches inside your mouth
Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving your jaw or tongue
Any change in the way your teeth fit together

Dr. Oz stresses the importance of demanding an oral screening from your dentists since many dentists don’t do this regularly. Dr. Oz says we need to change the way our dentists take care of us. At Barotz Dental oral cancer screenings are part of our standard of care at every preventative maintenance appointment.

Can Good Oral Hygiene Save Your Life?

If the eyes are the window to your soul, then the mouth should be the door to your heart. Not just because it is key to a loving kiss, a pretty smile and savoring a meal, but also because poor oral health can be the root cause of some serious health problems, including heart disease. Yet, many Americans, even those with good access to healthcare and insurance, don't give oral care the attention it deserves. We bypass brushing, forgo the floss and dodge the dentist until there is a problem. Some adults have such heighten dental anxiety they never set foot in a dentist's office.

For more information on the effects of periodontal disease visit:
http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/can-good-oral-hygiene-save-your-life

Preventing Emergency Treatment

Many people don't see a dentist on a regular basis. They go only when they feel they have a problem. At Barotz Dental we call this "emergency treatment" as opposed to "preventive treatment". While these patients may feel they are saving money, it usually ends up costing much more in both dollars and time. The reason for this is that most dental problems don't have any symptoms until they reach the advanced stages.

An example is tooth decay. We hear all the time, "Nothing hurts - I don't have any problems." But tooth decay doesn't hurt!...Until it gets close to the nerve of the tooth.

Then a root canal and crown are usually necessary, instead of a filling which could have been placed several years ago when it was still just a small cavity. We can usually detect a cavity 3-4 years before it may develop any symptoms. It is not uncommon to see a patient with a tremendous cavity and they have never felt a thing!

If it's been more than 6 months since your last exam and cleaning, call our office to schedule an appointment today. Don't wait for a cavity to become a root canal!

Dr. Charles S. Dr. Barotz will discuss how he built an extremely successful dental practice (and business) based on the wise counsel and common sense practices of various teachers, mentors and others he has known both in and out of the dental profession.

Coupled with 30 years of experience, he provides great insights to both the business and dental world. The book serves as an excellent how-to manual for other dentists aspiring to have a practice that can excel while providing personal attention to the patient so often lacking in medical care today.

Dentists and businessmen alike will benefit from Dr. Barotz’s finely tuned approach as he encourages them to take their business in their own hands and transform them from average to extraordinary.

Denver IDEA Café meets every Friday from 2:00pm-3:30pm at the Panera Bread on 13th and Grant Street. That two o’clock chair-side rendezvous may not seem nearly as exciting as a late lunch with a friend, but we have 10 great reasons to make it well worth it!

1. It Prevents Oral Cancer. You may or may not realize you are screened for oral cancer during your regular dental cleaning. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, an American dies of oral cancer every hour of every day.

2. It Wards Off Gum Disease. Gum disease (an infection in the gum tissues and bone that keep your teeth in place) is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss. It can be treated and reversed if diagnosed early. Regular cleanings, check-ups, and daily brushing and flossing are key weapons in the fight against these conditions.

3. It is About More than Your Mouth. Sure, not getting regular check-ups may make you less kissable, but did you know that studies have linked heart attacks and strokes to gum disease associated with poor oral hygiene? A trip to our office every 3-6 months could reduce your risk of serious health problems.

4. You Want to Preserve Your Smile. As mentioned, gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. To keep your pearly whites intact, stick with your cleaning schedule.

5. It is Best to Detect Dental Problems Early. We’ve already touched upon early detection of gum disease and oral cancer, but don’t overlook more basic dental problems. Cavities and broken fillings are easy to treat. Without regular trips to the dentist, these problems can lead to root canals, gum surgery and tooth extraction. Which sounds worse: a 30-minute cleaning or 60 minutes under the knife?

6. You Want to Know You Are Doing It Right. Maybe you bought a fancy new electric toothbrush, or are not keeping up with what current research has to say about caring for your teeth. Either way, check-ups allow us to examine your mouth and keep you on the right path.

7. Your Smile Improves the Quality of Life. Not only is your smile contagious to those around you, it releases endorphins, lowers blood pressure, and boosts the immune system.

8. You Want to Upgrade Your Smile. If you are already suffering from tooth decay or gum problems, regular appointments will allow our office to create a personalized treatment plan that will give you the best smile possible.

9. You Want to Dazzle. Regular cleanings remove most tobacco, coffee, and tea stains; polishing your teeth to a beautiful shine!

10. You Need Some Time Alone. Okay, maybe not completely alone, but the time you spend in our reception area and in our chair is really your time. You can forget about the office or the stresses of family life. We want to make your dental experience the most pleasant ever. In fact, many patients comment they would rather linger here after an appointment than return to work! You deserve a supremely comfortable, relaxing atmosphere to promote your entire well-being. Please consider enjoying complimentary spa amenities including: natural aromatherapy, a foot massager, warm neck pillows, movies with virtual glasses, lip therapy, and healthy refreshments during your visit. You deserve to give yourself some rejuvenation. Take advantage of the time you are given, rather than worrying about how to fit it in your tight schedule. Your health and well-being should never take a back seat to your daily planner.

If it’s been more than 6 months since your last check up and cleaning, call our office to schedule an appointment today. VOLUME 6, 1999, the first use of dental appliances or bridges comes from the Etruscans, whose masterful goldworkers made gold dental bridges for women so they could show off their wealth. Becker says the Etruscans were the first to use dental bridges and retention bands over 2600 years ago. Some Etruscan women would have their incisors removed (a process called "tooth ablation" or evulsion) so they could be fitted with the gold prosthetics.

Fun Dental Facts 3

Year commercial floss was first manufactured: 1882

Material it was first made of: silk

Newest material: gortex

Amount bought per person: 18 yards

Amount that should be bought per person: 122 yards (figuring on a foot a day)

Percent who say they floss daily: 28% (some are fibbibg according to the sales data above)

In 1994 a prison inmate in West Virginia braided floss into a rope, scaled the wall and escaped.

83% of people believe their teeth are more important to their appearance than hair and eyes.

Fun Dental Fact #2

The average woman smiles about 62 times a day.
A man? In fact, it is more important than most people realize.

Research has long suggested that there is a link between gum disease and other health issues, including heart disease, stroke and diabetes. In a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers feel that if you treat severe gum disease, you can help prevent fewer heart attacks and strokes. In fact, many scientists are finding that by treating severe gum disease you can actually improve the health of the heart.

There is also a correlation between your oral health and diabetes. Research also reports that gum disease could make certain people more likely to develop early signs of diabetes. Diabetics are three to four times higher at risk of developing gum disease than non-diabetics, because of their being more vulnerable to developing infections. In fact, diabetics with untreated gum disease may find it nearly impossible to manage their blood sugar levels and diabetes therapies can fail to work.

It doesn’t stop there. Studies also showed that bacteria normally found in swollen gums have also been found in the placentas of pregnant women with high blood pressure. Gum disease has been shown to create a higher risk of premature births, which of course places a baby at high risk for problems. The good news is that pregnant women can safely receive treatment for gum disease during their pregnancy.

I’m sure if you watch television you have seen Sally Field in commercials about the dangers of osteoporosis, a bone disease that can lead to increased risk for bone fractures. Unfortunately, not only does osteoporosis pose a problem for the back (spine), hips and wrists, it also increases the risk of tooth loss. Osteoporosis can weaken the jaw which may lower a person's defense against bacteria that affect the gums. Bacteria in the gums mean a high probability for gum disease. If you have osteoporosis, be sure to brush and floss on a regular basis and don’t forget to visit us because if you are already losing bone mass, you're at a higher risk for losing teeth.

As you begin your goal of getting healthy, make sure you schedule an exam with your dentist so you can get headed in the right direction. Give us a call today.

Are You More Afraid of the Cure than the Disease?

You Can Win the Battle Against Gum Disease with Little to No Pain.

Dr. Barotz here. If you know anything about me, you know that I am passionate about providing the very best that modern technology has to offer to my patients, and because of that passion, I’m very excited to tell you about a new technology that is just short of a miracle - Laser Gum Therapy. This is an amazing breakthrough in periodontal (gum) treatment. If you have been told you need scalpel and suture gum surgery, laser gum therapy may be a wonderful alternative for you. It is fast, convenient and requires absolutely no cutting, stitches or lengthy recovery period.

It is estimated that as many as 75 percent of Americans over the age of 35 suffer from gum disease, which can destroy teeth, gums and the nerves that serve them. In fact, gum disease is more common than heart disease, stroke, cancer and Alzheimer’s combined. And what is more frightening is that gum disease has been proven to travel to other areas of the body. Left untreated, periodontal infection can increase your risk of developing many other diseases. Consider this.

If you have periodontal disease, you increase your risk for:
Heart disease by 150%
Stroke by 300%
Premature birth and low birth weight babies by 700%
Osteoporosis by 200%
Respiratory infections by 500%

I am not here to frighten you. In fact I want to provide you with information that can actually be comforting and reassuring.

Many people with gum disease are terrified of the treatment because they have heard story after story about traditional treatment which involves scalpel surgery, stitches, bleeding, swelling, pain and numerous trips to the dentist or periodontist’s office.

Those days are over. Laser Gum Therapy has been shown to eliminate periodontal infection and actually assists in the regeneration of gum and bone. The Laser removes only the diseased tissue and leaves healthy tissue alone. Pain is minimal. Patients who have had Laser Gum Therapy most often only have to take Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) to feel comfortable.

If you have periodontal disease, please explore your options. Not all laser gum treatments are the same. The procedure used at Barotz Dental, LANAP – Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, is the only therapy that is FDA approved. Additionally, the dentist or periodonist must go through advanced training to become certified. Only dentists who have been trained and licensed for LANAP therapy can claim to treat your gums with new attachment and bone formation.

If you want more information, give me a call. I’m happy to offer you a consult at no charge. 303.595.4994.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year….

Although Your Teeth and Jaw May be Singing Something Different.

17.6 million Americans report that the holidays are their most stressful time of year and it isn’t surprising. You run around spending money you really shouldn’t be spending, drinking and eating things that aren’t on your diet, and you’re keeping those commitments of spending time with people you probably would prefer to avoid.

Dr. Barotz here. Most of you are probably aware how stress can wreck havoc on your body, but you may not realize that it can also ruin your teeth. Stress can cause problems like bruxism – the medical term for teeth grinding or clenching, and to the increased production of cortisol, a hormone which is released by the body during stress that can advance periodontal disease (gum disease). Periodontal disease, left untreated, can ultimately lead to bone and tooth loss. In fact it is the major reason why adults loose their teeth.

If bruxism isn’t treated, it can result in broken or chipped teeth, the need for dental restorations, pain in jaw muscles, tension-related headaches and problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which joins the jaw to the head.

A clenched jaw can exert up to 300 pounds of pressure. That is a lot of pressure on your teeth, especially if you have cavities or old crowns or fillings. Over time, arthritis, inflammation and degenerative changes can occur in the jaw joint. The disc in the joint can shift and then causes clicking or popping sounds. It can also "lock" out of place, making it impossible to open the mouth more than an inch or so.

TMJ disorder can mimic migraine headaches, earaches, sinus infections and tooth abscesses. It can cause dizziness, ringing in the ears and muscle pain that radiates down the neck and shoulders. Women have more TMJ problems than men -- possibly because the jaw muscle bulks up in men.

If you feel you have developed bruxism or TMJ, get in to see your dentist. Have your dentist do a complete exam to see if you are grinding your teeth or if may have periodontal disease. The most common treatment for TMJ is a night guard. Barotz Dental uses the NTI device, which is smaller, custom-fitted for your bite and more comfortable than the regular mouth guards. You can find over-the-counter mouth guards, but they generally don’t last long and really offer you little protection.

If you are one of the millions of American who has periodontal disease, there are some amazing new developments that can help save your teeth. In fact, just this month Barotz Dental announced that we are now offering a new state-of-the-art laser gum therapy (one of two practices in Denver) that not only treats gum disease but can regrow lost bone and tissue! The results are amazing!

The point I am trying to make is that sometimes the holidays add to an already stressful time in your life, and if you aren’t taking measures to decrease that stress, you’re on the road for even more anxiety by developing dental problems.

The following table lists some of the common warning signs and symptoms of stress. The more signs and symptoms you notice in yourself, the closer you may be to stress overload.

Stress Warning Signs and Symptoms

Memory problems
Inability to concentrate
Poor judgment
Seeing only the negative
Anxious or racing thoughts
Constant worrying
Moodiness
Irritability or short temper
Agitation, inability to relax
Feeling overwhelmed
Sense of loneliness and isolation
Depression or general unhappiness
Aches and pains
Diarrhea or constipation
Nausea, dizziness
Chest pain, rapid heartbeat
Loss of sex drive
Frequent colds
Eating more or less
Sleeping too much or too little
Isolating yourself from others
Procrastinating or neglecting responsibilities
Using alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs to relax
Nervous habits (e.g. nail biting, pacing)

While you may feel like you can’t control the amount of stress in your life, you can control how you respond to it. The first step is to take charge. You have to take charge of your thoughts, your emotions, your schedule, your relationships and how you deal with problems. Stress management is a lot like the Serenity Prayer in that you need to learn how to change the situations that are causing you stress, change your reaction to those situations you can’t change, and know the difference.

Give yourself a gift this holiday and try to make time for rest and relaxation. I love the holidays and everything they stand for and truly enjoy the food and drink found at social gatherings. But as we move into this festive time, a word of caution as you lift your drink -- some drinks are worse for your teeth than others.

While the alcohol in beverages won’t damage your teeth, the sugar content in most alcoholic drinks, including beer, can harm the enamel. Beverages, such as sweet wines or mixed drinks that contain sodas or citrus juices, can be worse because of their high acidity. And you may not have noticed, but research shows that people tend to grind their teeth more after drinking alcohol.

I’m not suggesting that you eliminate holiday spirits just to avoid a couple of cavities, but I do have some suggestions that may help lessen the damage to your teeth during this time of merriment.

* Don’t pass up the cheese and cracker trays. Cheese reduces the risk of dental decay, stimulates the flow of saliva and contains milk proteins which neutralize plaque acids.

* Drink water between drinks and rinse your mouth with water (not tequila shooters). The water will help decrease the acid content of your mouth, which in turn may decrease the damage done to your teeth.

* Chew sugarless gum between drinks or on the way home. Chewing gum helps increase saliva flow, which in turn helps rinse the sugars from your mouth.

* I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Brush and floss your teeth, especially before going to bed. To help you remember, try leaving your toothbrush on your pillow before heading out to party.

* Drink a lot of water before going to bed. Not only will this help with a hangover, it will help reduce the intensity of which you grind your teeth.
* Get fluoride treatments from your dentist. Fluoride protects your teeth by inhibiting the acid from attacking the surface of the tooth.

* When choosing a drink, pay careful attention to the pH value (level of acidity) in the drink. Food or drink with a pH value of less than 5.5 can damage your teeth. Save the fizzy drinks for special occasions because they can really damage your teeth. The bubbles are made by pumping carbon dioxide into the beverage, which is acidic when mixed with water.

* Take special heed if you are drinking wine. Wine contains a lot of acid, usually in the range of 3.0 to 3.5. The reason for this is because the lower pH values improve the stability of wine. Most people who drink wine will spend at least 45 minutes to an hour and a half drinking it, which provides time for the acid to affect your teeth. Wine drinkers can counter the negative effects of wine by drinking a lot of water between drinks and not keeping the wine in your mouth for too long.

By following just a couple of these tips during the next couple of months, you’ll be able to welcome 2009 with a brighter and healthier smile.

DON’T LET AN AILING ECONOMY HURT YOUR TEETH

Dr. Barotz here. Each afternoon I log on to Google and check out the business news. Some days I feel good, but lately there have been more days than I’d like where I just shake my head in amazement. Many of us have been affected by the latest economic news. I know I have. I used to have a 401K but now it is more like a 201K.

So as I was watching the Golf Channel the other night, I thought that maybe if I remind people of what they can do to keep their teeth healthy, it might just help. After all, dentistry is my passion and I went into it for many reasons. I enjoy the artistry that goes into building a new smile, but moreover I love the life-changing results that can take place when I can take a smile that a patient was so ashamed of and make it into a drop-dead gorgeous smile. I know you have heard most of these tips before, but please, these can help keep your teeth and gums healthy.

* Floss your teeth. Every time you go into your dentist I’m sure your hygienist will ask you if you are flossing regularly. Seriously, flossing is vital to preventing disease. By flossing once a day you can remove the plaque that forms between the teeth and below the gum line and it only takes a minute or two.
* Even when money is tight, visit your dentist regularly. When your dentist removes the plaque from your teeth, this reduces the number of bacteria, which is crucial in preventing tooth decay. Remember, it is a lot less expensive to have a comprehensive exam and cleaning than it is to get a filling, crown, or have a tooth replaced.
* Chew gum. According to a study published in the July 2006 issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association, chewing gum that contains xylitol, like Trident for instance, can help curb bacteria that cause tooth decay.
* Eat crunchy foods. Foods that have to be chewed that are low in sugar help stimulate saliva. Saliva contains minerals that can help repair tooth enamel.
* When you have a problem that needs fixing, like missing teeth, bites issues or loose dentures, don’t wait. Contact your dentist. These types of problems can affect chewing or tooth wear. There are new and affordable dental treatments, such as mini-implants, that can be used to help solve these problems.

Even though the economy continues to teeter-totter, don’t discount the health of your teeth. By taking care of them now, you’ll realize a savings in comfort, confidence and your dollar.

WOULD YOU SUCK ON BATTERY ACID?

Some candies are worse than others.

After a busy day at the office today, my wife called and asked if I could stop to pick up some Halloween candy for the little trick or treaters that would sure to be ringing our doorbell. Since Robin is now putting in more hours at the office, I was more than happy to assist her with this errand, plus I would get to pick out the candy that I like.
While I love the sweet candies like taffy and chocolates, I am a real sucker for the sour treats. But recently I read a statewide warning from the California Dental Hygienists Association that I would like to share with you.

These contemporary candies are very popular and many people have the mistaken belief that they are safer for your teeth because they are not as sweet. Unfortunately, the pH of the sour candies is extremely acidic and is similar to the levels of battery acid.

Some of the most popular sour candies like Sour Patch Kids, Starburst, Warheads, Atomic Warheads and Sour Skittles are significantly high in acid and may cause erosion of the enamel (eat the tooth away). Erosion of the enamel can lead to teeth sensitivity and tooth decay.

The risk is especially great because many times these candies are chewed or sucked on for a long period of time, which creates a longer time for the acid to do its damage. Eat a lot of these sour candies and you increase your chances for cavities, tooth sensitivity, staining, soft-tissue sensitivities and loss of shine.

Tips for this Halloween candy:
Try replacing the sour candies with non-sour sugarless candies.
Rinse your mouth with water immediately after consuming the candy.
If you do eat a sour candy, do not brush immediately when you are finished with your snack. Because of the acidic nature of the candy, you could experience soft tooth enamel and brushing your teeth could abrade the enamel.
Sticky candies aren’t as bad as you may think. Research from the Forsyth Dental Center shows that some sticky foods clear from the mouth faster than less sticky foods. Caramels, for example, dissolve faster than potato chips, dried fruit or crackers.
If you are wearing metal braces rather than Invisalign, which you can remove when eating, be sure to avoid caramels, bubblegum, all hard candies, taffy, licorice, jellybeans and candy corn.

No matter what you decide to give out (and ultimately eat), keep these tips in mind and maintain good oral health, and you should have a fun Halloween and still enjoy your treats.

Cosmetic Dentistry Dates Back 2000 Years!!!

Cosmetic dentistry has become very popular and mainstream in recent years. With all of the various ways to get a sparkling Hollywood smile that are available today, it is hard to believe that over two thousand years ago another culture was performing cosmetic procedures.

The Mayan culture was extremely sophisticated, with it's own written language, history and traditions. The peak of the Mayan culture was 300-900 AD. This is when historians began to see the first cosmetic dentistry performed. Naturally the Mayans did not have the technology to do the procedures that would normally come to mind, such as bleaching and porcelain veneers. Instead, they would prepare the teeth and cement on natural materials such as turquoise, quartz, jadeite, iron pyrites, and hematite. They used some methods similar to what dentist today use to place veneers, but they did all of their procedures without any local anesthesia or modern instruments. Ouch! At least today our number one concern is your safety and comfort. So, why not take advantage of this and come in for your Complimentary Cosmetic Consultation.

Don't Let Sensitive Teeth Control What You Eat!!

Many people suffer from sensitive teeth, causing them pain when they eat hot foods, or have a cold drink. Sensitivity can be caused by many different factors, such as, brushing too hard, recession of the gums, cracked teeth, gum disease, grinding teeth, or plaque.

There are many things that you can do at home to help ease the pain of sensitivity: maintain good oral hygiene, by making sure to clean your entire mouth thoroughly. Use a soft bristled toothbrush, with desensitizing toothpaste. Watch what foods you eat, avoiding eating the foods that are high in acid. Use products, such as toothpaste and mouthwash that are high in fluoride, as this helps decrease hypersensitivity. If non of this makes the impact you are hoping for, make sure to call your dentist to review the different options to help alleviate the problem. Your teeth can be desensitized without drilling. As discouraging as it may be, gum disease, tooth loss, dentures, dental implants and jaw bone deterioration are all common occurrences for people who are entering their Golden Years. And while these things can’t be avoided, they can be corrected.

Fortunately, the dental profession has made incredible advancements during the past few years that are eliminating the pain, embarrassment and overall dissatisfaction seniors often experience when it comes to their dental health. The days of uncomfortable, poor fitting dentures are gone, as are the problems associated with deteriorating jaw bones and gum disease. The key is making sure you’re finding the right solution for your dental health problems.

While there are a number of corrective dentistry options available to seniors, the advancements taking place with dentures and tooth implants are proving to be two of the best options modern dentistry has to offer:

The 21st Century Denture
One of the most common complaints from denture wearers is the "false teeth" look, causing them to be self conscious about their dentures. This complaint is usually accompanied by shortcomings in the ability to chew and the overall discomfort they experience. Fortunately, major advancements have been made in the craftsmanship of dentures and today dentures are designed and handcrafted specifically to complement a person’s age, sex, physical appearance and even their personality. Dentures can be customized by dentists today in the same way a tailor customizes a new suit.

For example, when looking at someone with a beautiful smile comprised entirely of their natural teeth, one will notice that each tooth is not precisely aligned with its neighboring teeth. Instead, the placement of the teeth varies slightly to create a beautiful and natural smile line. Modern dentures account for this natural irregularity by handsetting teeth in dentures to make sure this same “look” occurs in the denture. This eliminates the “piano key” appearance denture wearers despise.

In addition to appearance, dentures are also being designed to improve chewing function. Because they’re specifically customized to perfectly fit a person’s mouth and jaw structure, chewing food is no longer a struggle.

The Implant Option
Even with the advancements with dentures, they may not be suitable – or necessary – for everyone. For many years, people who lost their teeth had only one choice for replacing them: dentures. Many denture wearers chose false teeth because they wanted to put an end to their tooth problems. They didn't realize that a whole new set of problems were beginning. Poor fitting dentures can cause pain during eating leading to poor nutrition. Dentures can cause additional problems, which can be intensified if they do not fit well. Long-term denture wearers can lose jawbone which causes the classic collapsed, wrinkled face common to many denture wearers.

For the first time, the replacement for missing teeth can be as strong or stronger than the original. Like teeth, dental implants are embedded in the jawbone. The bone actually bonds to the implants. This allows the teeth to be replaced without placing any pressure on the gums, thus eliminating the pain normally associated with dentures. Using dental implants, the upper teeth can be replaced without covering the roof of the mouth. Far fetched? Not for Dr. Charles Barotz, a prominent Cosmetic Dentist practicing in downtown Denver. “We give our patients a true dental spa experience. With luxuries ranging from fresh baked cookies, to foot massages, to virtual reality glasses, we’ve taken the old clichés out of dentistry,” he explains.

And although you will indeed feel spoiled after a trip to Dr. Barotz, the focus of his practice goes far beyond relaxation. Dr. Barotz, who has been creating dazzling smiles for more than 25 years, is dedicated to the art of cosmetic dentistry. “Good cosmetic dentistry looks like nothing more than a healthy, naturally beautiful smile, and achieving such a look is an art form,” Dr. Barotz reveals. “Every patient deserves a smile that makes them feel confident. Yet many people aren’t blessed with great teeth. Taking a step like cosmetic dentistry has a profound impact on a patient’s life. And that’s what we’re all about,” he finished.

With thousands of hours of continuing education under his belt, Dr. Barotz has mastered his art. The well known dentist, whose lush practice caters to adults and their dental needs, is up on the latest trends and technologies and offers Coloradoans the most innovative approaches in dentistry. From a run of the mill crown to porcelain veneers and whitening, to complex cases involving tooth replacement with dental implants. Dr. Barotz offers it all. “We are a full service practice. Because our dentists are skilled in all aspects of the field, we don’t have to refer certain work to other specialists. This is rare in dentistry, and a definite assert to our patients,” he says.

Another of Dr. Barotz’ finely honed skills is listing. “We don’t believe in sitting our patients down and talking in dental jargon while we tell them what they need. Instead, we ask what they wish to achieve through cosmetic dentistry and help them find the best and most comprehensive way to achieve their goals,” says Dr. Barotz.

Whether it is the access to the most up-to-date dental care, or the artistically designed grin you’ll leave with, or the aroma of homemade cookies or relaxing massage, Dr. Barotz will give you a reason to smile – and to come back for more.

We Pamper You: The Ultimate Dental Spa

There is no reason to fear the dentist. Have you noticed spaces in your teeth or receding of your gum line? If you suffer from any of these symptoms, you have periodontal problems that need to be evaluated and treated immediately. Long term effects of this can not only affect your image but can cause severe health problems; especially if you are already at risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, lung problems and osteoporosis. Expecting mothers have to be extremely cautious as well. If gum disease goes untreated it is six times more likely to cause premature births. Your mouth is considered the gateway for germs getting through to your respiratory system. By breathing in the bacteria that exists with gum disease, it is possible to contract diseases such as pneumonia. To prevent this, it is important to get your teeth cleaned regularly, and to practice good home care. Flossing once a day, brushing on a regular basis, and using a good fluoride mouth rinse will help prevent periodontal disease. Here at Barotz Dental, we want to help you avoid these problems. If you already suffer from gum disease, then you need to treat and monitor it! Call and schedule for your next cleaning and exam, and prepay for the appointment, and we will give you a FREE fluoride treatment (a $30 value). But hurry, this special offer only lasts until April 15th! Call us today schedule your appointment at 303-595-4994!

Drop Dead Gorgeous Dentures!

Many people think that because they have dentures they are unable to benefit from cosmetic dentistry. Previously dentures caused discomfort, difficulty eating, deterioration of the jawbone and gum disease. With the innovations in dental technologies, the right solution to dental health issues is more accessible and eliminates the negative attributes associated with dentures.

Tooth loss is extremely common especially in the Golden years. Now sufferers have options replacing missing teeth without compromising daily enjoyments such as the tastes and textures of food and drink. Major advancements have been made in the craftsmanship of dentures. Today’s dentures are designed and tailored to compliment the look and function of the wearer, much in the same way a tailor customizes a new suit. Functionality is not only improved through customized fitting of the mouth and jaw, but appearance is also enhanced. By hand setting teeth in the dentures, natural irregularities seen in the alignment of original teeth are now evident, eliminating the “false teeth” look many denture wearers complain about.

Dental implants are a relatively new procedure in addressing tooth loss. Finally there is a replacement that is stronger than the original tooth. Implants are imbedded into the jawbone creating a bond similar to that of original teeth. By utilizing dental implants, the roof of the mouth remains uncovered, giving the wearer the ability to enjoy the subtle tastes and textures of food and drink. The common look of sunken in cheeks and droopy face may also be eliminated with the use of dental implants.

Dr. Barotz has the knowledge and expertise to properly diagnose your dental situation and determine whether dentures or implants are the best solution for your needs. Whether it is dentures or implants, Barotz Dental will ensure a natural looking, fully functional solution without compromising the simplicities you enjoy everyday.

Denver’s Premier Health Experts Present the 2006 Health Vanity Affair

Barotz Dental, in combination with Bodies by Michael and Kelly, Executive Tans and Motion Chiropractic are pleased to announce Denver’s first ever 2006 Health Vanity Affair. On the day of the show, he broke a tooth. Being miles from home, and late Friday evening, he didn’t know where to turn. Dr. Barotz is the treating dentist for the Denver Center of Performing Arts and was able to complete emergency dentistry making the actors smile shine for opening act. With the dedication to his work, and customer care, the actor decided to make Dr. Barotz his personal dentist even though he lives out-of-state. As an actor, his smile needs to be perfect. Luckily Dr. Barotz is a front-runner in virtual dentistry, making this long-distance Doctor/patient relationship possible.

Virtual Dentistry is the process in which patients can electronically mail “smile” photographs of their teeth, and Dr. Barotz can virtually enhance their smile with digital imaging, allowing them to view different shapes, shades and sizes of their smile. They then receive a consultation over the phone from Dr. Barotz himself. Once treatment has been decided upon, the patients are able to see the finished product through the specialized software before they even meet Dr. Barotz. Dr. Barotz explains the intricate details about the procedure to the patient. Dr. Barotz and the patient are then united to complete the work.

Barotz Dental, raising cosmetic dentistry to an art for 25 years. Although sports and energy drinks promote hydration, they may also contribute to the loss of tooth enamel leading to tooth decay, cavities, and tooth loss. Colas, which contain phosphoric acid, actually decay teeth less rapidly than sports or energy drinks because these “healthy drinks” often contain other organic acids negatively affecting your teeth. In a recent study non-cola drinks and sports drinks were three to eleven times more harmful to teeth than cola based beverages. One of the major components to enamel loss by beverages is the PH level of the drink. By comparison, Mountain Dew one of the most acidic sodas containing a PH of 3.22, Gatorade contains a PH of 2.95, and Surge has a PH of 3.02.

There are some precautions that, if used correctly will help reduce the amount of tooth enamel lost by drinking sports drinks. It is recommended not to sip your sports drink as prolonged exposure to the acids may increase the amount of enamel lost, and decrease the time in which it is lost. Rinsing your mouth with water can also reduce the effects of sports drinks. It is also recommended that you do not brush your teeth immediately after drinking these beverages, as toothpaste is abrasive and may assist the acids. These items, in conjunction with a good diet, proper oral hygiene, and regular visits to the dentist, will help reduce the loss of enamel in turn reducing your risks for cavities, tooth decay, and even osteoporosis. Remember once tooth enamel is gone, it cannot be replaced.

Barotz Dental has been raising cosmetic dentistry to an art for 25 years. Periodontal or gum disease, is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth firmly in place. Poor brushing and flossing habits that allow plaque to build up on the teeth and harden is the typical cause for this affliction. The long-term effects of periodontal disease include sore, bleeding gums, painful chewing and even tooth loss. However the effects of periodontal disease go far beyond the mouth. Prolonged exposure to the bacteria created by periodontal disease can have severe effects on your health especially if you are at risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes or osteoporosis.

Periodontal disease is not only treatable, but can be prevented with proper brushing and flossing. For the entire month of May, visit Barotz Dental and receive your free exam, two bitewing x-rays, and periodontal screening a $245 value at no cost. As the saying goes, the best defense is a good offense; well the best treatment is good prevention. While appearance is important, the doubts and insecurity of wondering if your breath is offensive is a problem that has a major impact on many relationships. Halitosis is the official name for bad breath, but we don't have to know its proper name in order to understand the negative effects that it can have in our lives. In order to understand halitosis, we must understand the cause of halitosis and the sites of halitosis in the mouth

The Cause of Halitosis. Halitosis, or bad breath, is caused by the bacteria in the mouth which degrade or "breakdown" proteins that are present in the mouth. These proteins, and other materials which are in the mouth naturally or from foods and drinks that we consume, are the fuel that powers "bad breath". The breakdown products of these proteins and other substances are described as "volatile sulfur compounds", one of which is hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide is also the same gas that is produced when one has flatulence. It has been shown that the bacteria that cause these sulfur compounds also are the bacteria that cause gum disease or periodontitis. Therefore, the bacterial plaque which causes periodontitis has to be considered as a causative factor for bad breath.

The Sites of Halitosis. Halitosis can be caused by the bacterial actions in various areas of the mouth. These areas are:
1. The tongue.
2. The teeth -- on and between the teeth.
3. The gums.
4. The stomach.

1. The Tongue
The tongue has emerged as the primary focal point regarding halitosis due to the bacteria that accumulate on the tongue. Studies have shown that the bacteria on the tongue are similar to the odor-causing bacteria that are associated with gum disease. However, it has been shown that the tongue surface is an important factor in the development of bad breath in both healthy mouths or those which have gum disease.

There are two considerations regarding the tongue's ability to cause bad breath. They are the amount of bacterial coating on the tongue, as well as the presence of deep fissures or grooves on the tongue. It is presumed that if your tongue has a heavy coating of bacteria on it (if you aren't cleaning your tongue) there may be one hundred times the bacteria present on the tongue than if your tongue has been brushed clean. The deep fissures or grooves on the tongue allow the bacteria to hide in them and avoid the cleansing action of saliva or the oxygen in the air that you breathe.

2. The Teeth
The teeth have the potential to be covered with bacteria that cause bad breath, but if the teeth are covered with bacteria, it is reasonable to assume that the tongue is loaded with bacteria. Definitely, the teeth need to be considered as sites that harbor bacteria, especially the sides of the teeth that touch each other. These sides can't be cleaned with a toothbrush and must be cleaned with floss. If you ever have eaten onions and tried to brush away the odor, take dental floss and clean the sides of the teeth -- you will see how much odor is coming from the sides of the teeth.

3. The Gums
The gum tissues can be a significant source of the bad breath problem. The gums form a "sulcus" or "ditch" that goes around the tooth and is usually 1-3 millimeters in depth. If you have gum disease, this ditch deepens and is called a "pocket". The bacteria that cause bad breath can get into these pockets and "feast" on the blood and pus in these depths. This can clearly cause bad breath.

**Note: If you still have bad breath after cleaning your tongue, you must consider the presence of gum disease as the source of the bad breath. Your body may be using the bad breath as a signal to tell you that there is gum infection present. When you consider that gum disease is associated with heart disease you can't afford to overlook the possibility of gum disease.

4. The Stomach
If you have addressed the possibility of bacteria on the teeth, gums and tongue and still have bad breath, you should consider the possibility that your odor comes from your stomach. Do you have a stomach reflux problem where you regurgitate stomach acid or do you have a constant upset stomach? Does alcohol contribute to your stomach problems? You may need to see a gastro-intestinal medical specialist if you have persistent stomach problems. Is your body using your bad breath to tell you about a stomach problem?

The solution to your bad breath problem starts with cleaning your teeth and tongue better.

Brushing. Brush your tongue by sticking your tongue out and brush as far back as you can before gagging. One way to reduce gagging is to take a deep breath and hold it before brushing -- holding the breath retards the gag reflex. If you feel a gag coming on, blow out the breath. There is, however, a limit regarding how far back you can brush.

Flossing. You can't clean the sides of the teeth that touch each other without using floss to "buff" the sides of the teeth.. Flossing is very important as a technique in reducing bad breath. If the floss smells after you have used it, you are probably determining one of the sites of your bad breath -- however, don't forget the tongue.

Mouthrinses. While there are a variety of commercial mouthrinses, the use of a prescription mouthrinse like chlorhexidine (Peridex, Perioguard) appears to have better potential for helping bad breath. These mouthrinses can be used best if you use your brush to apply the chlorhexidine to your tongue and brush into the grooves. Then rinse with the chlorhexidine for 60 seconds.

For more information visit http://www.barotzdental.com

February is National Heart Month Are your gums infected... your heart could be next!

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among Americans and a leading cause of disability. It is estimated that in the year 2006 1.2 million Americans will have their first or recurrent heart attack. Prevention is the answer. Everyone has heard healthy eating habits, exercise, and weight loss are the answer, but what about your teeth? Do you get frequent pain in your mouth? Do your gums bleed when you brush or floss your teeth? Have you noticed spaces in your teeth or receding of your gum line? If you suffer from any of these symptoms, you have a periodontal problem that needs to be evaluated and treated immediately. Long term effects of this can cause severe health problems, especially if you are already at risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Expecting mothers have to be extremely cautious as well. If gum disease goes untreated it can cause premature births. If you are prone to lung infections, gum disease can worsen your condition. Your mouth is considered the gateway for germs getting through to your respiratory system and by breathing in the bacteria that exists with gum disease, it is possible to contract such diseases as pneumonia. That is why it is so important to get your teeth cleaned regularly, and to practice good home care, such as flossing once a day, brushing on a regular basis, and using a good mouthwash. Here at Barotz Dental, we want to help you avoid these problems, and if you already suffer from gum disease, then we want to treat it, and monitor it!

Special Promotions
If you call in and schedule for your next cleaning and exam, and pre-pay for the appointment we will give you a FREE fluoride treatment (a $25 value).
